STILL STANDING - DESPITE THE WIND!
With Trevor Nunn’s new stage adaptation of Gone With The Wind taking
London’s West End by storm, specialist operator North America Travel
Service is giving Scarlett O’Hara devotees a chance to visit the
only surviving building featured in the classic 1939 movie.
The picturesque Old Mill, which appeared in the opening scenes of the
film, is located in North Little Rock in the southern state of Arkansas.
Built in 1933 as a faithful re-creation of an 1800s working water mill,
it is now on the National Register of Historic places and a well-known
local beauty spot. Admission is free.
History and heritage buffs will find plenty more to discover in Arkansas:
• Little Rock - visit Little Rock Central High School, scene of
the 1957 desegregation crisis which was a key moment in the Civil Rights
struggle, then fast-forward to modern times and follow the achievements
of Arkansas’ most famous son at the Clinton Presidential Center.
• Fort Smith - in the 1870s and 1880s, Fort Smith (on Arkansas’
western border with Oklahoma) was the last bastion of civilisation before
the lawless ‘Indian Territory’ to the west. See the gallows
of ‘Hangin’ Judge’ Isaac Parker and the jail known as
‘Hell on the Border’.
• Hot Springs - one of America’s first spa resorts, from late
Victorian times to the 1960s the rich and famous came to Hot Springs to
‘take the waters’. Al Capone came too, to holiday and to meet
local bootleggers who kept his Chicago clubs well-supplied! Follow in
his footsteps by staying at his favourite hotel, the historic Arlington.
• Eureka Springs - named one of America’s ‘Dozen Distinctive
Destinations’ by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and
renowned for its chocolate-box Victorian buildings. Steel yourself for
the ghost tour at the 1886 Crescent Hotel!
North America Travel Service (Tel: 0113 243 0000; e-mail leeds@nats-uk.com)
