SURF AT THE WORLD’S
MOST FAMOUS COMPETITION…
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A PRO TO HIT THE WAVES!
Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival, the world's oldest professional
event of its kind, returns to Victoria’s spectacular Great Ocean
Road from 18-28 March 2008 – and if you wanted to learn how to hit
the waves in this surfers’ paradise, here is your chance.
With the world’s best surfers hitting town, the famous competition
will put the seaside village of Torquay, Australia‘s Surf Capital,
and iconic Bells Beach into the spotlight, as high-profile Australians
Stephanie Gilmore (2007 World Champion) and Taj Burrow (2007 World No.
2) will compete for one of the most highly sought-after titles in surfing.
But with a number of surf schools in the area that can teach the basics,
you don’t have to leave the surfing to the pros when you visit the
Great Ocean Road. Torquay Surfing Academy, Go Ride a Wave and Westcoast
Surf School have experienced surfers and qualified instructors with an
extensive knowledge of the ocean.
As long as you can swim a little and are confident in the water, even
beginners can learn some skills in just one day to surf at the beach and
take in the beautiful surrounds of Victoria’s Surf Coast: Torquay’s
surf beach is ideal for beginners; good intermediate reefs and beach breaks
can be found near the town, at Point Impossible, Point Danger and Jan
Juc; and world-renowned Bells Beach, only for the most experienced, is
just a five-minute drive.
More than an annual pilgrimage for surfers, Rip Curl Pro is well known
for its exuberant atmosphere, with Victoria’s famous coastline pumping
with activity over the Easter long weekend. On the clifftop at Bells,
a listed site of historical significance, Rip Curl will build a mini-city,
where surfing fans can watch the action, explore the market stalls and
enjoy the live music.
For a further insight into the surfing life, Surfworld is the largest
Surfing and Beach Culture museum in the world and has been recognised
as one of “the most significant centres of world surfing heritage”.
Fly from London Heathrow to Melbourne return with China Eastern from £625.
Valid for departures from 1st-31st March 2008, book by 31 March 2008.
